G-Shock Collector’s Corner: Colin Phillips

Name: Colin Phillips
Number of G-Shocks in collection: 53

Our latest featured G-Shock collector has got some serious pedigree. Not just the proud owner of an impressive 53 G-Shock models, Colin Philips turned his passion for the brand into a career, becoming a G-Shock sponsored athlete in Dubai. Colin isn’t your run of the mill baller or soccer player though, he’s more an all-body fitness and health guy and holds the Guinness World Record for most bungee jumps in 24 hours. Yeah, you know G-Shock like to support people who are in their own lane. We grabbed some time with Colin and talked about his love of unbreakable watches.

What made you first become interested in G-Shocks?
I got my first G-shock at the age of 13, it was the DW-003 in Yellow. It was a birthday gift from my father who took me shopping – I had already seen the ‘cooler’ older kids wearing them. As soon as I saw this bright yellow timepiece, it was love at first sight! That thing did not leave my wrist.

What is your favourite G-Shock model generally?
It’s hard to select one model but it would be between the G-8900 and DW-6900 series. This is the perfect blend of style and functionality. My G-8900s have been to the top of Kilimanjaro in Africa and the bottom of oceans. I’ve run, rowed and cycled marathons, lifted weights and sailed in them. They’ve withstood 50 degree-plus in the desert, and I’ve surfed waves, broken bungee World records and even ran with the bulls in Spain wearing them. Then the DW-6900 part of my collection is perfect blend of street fashion to be worn at any occasion to make a style statement. Both are badass watches.

What is your favourite G-Shock release from your personal collection?
I am a massive fan of the old school styling of the DW-5000 series and any mad Hyper Colours. The new GA-400 in blue and orange is insane, although a slightly different feel. The functions are fun and cool, I think it will be a collector’s item in a few years. My G-001 Hyper Colour always gets compliments, as does the G-8100C in purple and pink. My DW6900SN in turquoise and the monster GA-150 in white is always hard to miss!

Is there a G-Shock model from the past that you think should be re-issued?
It should totally be the DW-003. In the original colours – limited edition style!

Is there a G-Shock you’re working hard to track down at the moment?
Yeah, the watch I want re-issued. I am currently hunting down a mint condition DW-003, in yellow! So let’s see where this takes me.

Do you have any interesting stories related to your collection?
I always enjoy interacting and getting an Instagram selfie with people I meet that are also wearing their Gs, however, the dream came true in 2012 when I became a G-Shock sponsored athlete. Then not only was I invited to officially open the Shock the World Tour 2012 in my home country of Dubai, UAE but I was instructed to break the ice and then shake hands with the founder, Mr.Ibe himself! It does not get any better as a collector. This gentleman is a legend, an inspiration in my world and meeting him did not disappoint. He’s such a humble, respectful man and only makes me love the brand deeper. Then a few days later I received a super limited edition GD-100 with the UAE colours running through the strap & DXB graphics! There were only 75 made. Epic!

Do you love G-Shock for fashion or function?
This is where G-Shock nails it as watch designers and makers for me – it’s both! You can look way cooler than you actually are while pushing yourself to extremes or just walking down the shops!

Has a G-Shock ever broken on you? What happened?
Not broken, but one slipped off me. It’s the ultimate watch love story – My first G-Shock love, the DW-003, the one I’m looking for now. It lasted 15 years, until I was 28, it got ripped off my wrist on the beautiful Lake Traunsee in Austria. It was during a wakeboarding wipe out, totally my fault. I was gutted but happy and proud it was lost during such an activity and not just some misplaced item. I still think about her to this day…

Do you have a holy grail G-Shock that you want but don’t have?
My holy grail would have to be getting a limited edition made for me, personally signed and designed. It would be a couple of colours with my name and a little design or number. Simple and classic styling. Although a giant size G-Man would be epic standing in the house.

Any other Gs you want to put out to the universe?
If anyone can hook a brother up, that would be sweet! The G-9200BL-2DR Riseman in earth blue, the DW-6900 all smurf blue, the GLS-8900LV and the GW-9300K-3JR Mudman ‘Love the sea and the Earth’ are all on my hit list. Holler at me on my Facebook page – Colin Phillips and Instagram.

Anything else you want to say about your collection or G-Shock?
Yeah, I have one small request to G-Shock; please make a series that the light stays illuminated even when flicking between modes.

I am a collector first and sponsored athlete second, as an ambassador for the brand within Dubai, UAE I am so grateful for the support and association with such a long lasting epic brand. Massive thank you to Casio Middle East & G-Shock for all your support. Keep designing epic, stylish series!
